Character

Woody Allen's new film, "Blue Jasmine" is released next week.  I read that it was so today in an article about his female characters (link).  That is what the title of the article purports, anyway.  I watched the trailer (link) and Holy Smokes!  I can't believe the cast.  Woody Allen runs with some pretty bad characters, it seems.  Who knew?

Woody Allen is a fulcrum for complaint and dissent.  Soon-Yi, of course, but much, much more.  Liberal ideologues dislike him.  Conservatives puke.  You have to be just a little twisted inside, I think, and fairly smart, too, to really love his works.

I really do.

I love what we often speak of as human "flaws" and "failings."  I have never been attracted to saints.  I only wanted to despoil the homecoming queen.  I resented the class valedictorian.  What was he doing?

It is all good, of course.  It is all character.  And so.  Reveal character and take the ride.  What is more dangerous?  What is more fun?

I'm confused about this J.K. Rowling mania.  I have never read anything by her, but I can't believe that it is anything that would interest me.  Can any of you tell me differently?  I automatically distrust anything so popular.  Except her, the author.  She fascinates me.

There you go.  I just wanted to put some words around the picture.  I think they are somehow connected.  This model was a real character.  I wish I could tell you.  And I will, someday, when you do not know it.

Wow, Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin. I've got to see this!

  3. Middle of the day here -- like 97 degrees out or something. I can't get off the couch -- I'm now watching Lost in Translation for the 150 thousandth time.

Why is it Bill Murray singing Roxy Music always gets to me?
